Fake News And The Indian Elections - BBC Click

BBC Click takes a look at how social media is being used in the Indian elections.

The largest democratic exercise in history is under way to decide who will govern India for the next five years and  there are serious concerns about the extent of false information circulating online.

Despite efforts by fact-checking organisations in the In the lead-up to the vote, and social media platforms trying to take greater responsibility, misleading information or misrepresentation is still prevalent.

There is also a black-hole in some social media sites such as Whatsapp; one of the most widely used platforms in India. With its end to end encryption it is difficult to assess how widespread the issue is. Direct messaging from friends and peers is also more likely to be trusted by the receiver and not evaluated with as much scrutiny and critical thinking.
